Egyptian Nubia (1550 - 1069 BC)
Egypt in Nubia, the Nubians in Egypt
In the mid-2 nd millennium BC Lower Nubia again came under Egyptian rule. The province was governed by an official seated at Aniba, with the title of the "Royal son of the kingdom of Kush". The annual tribute of "Nubian gold" and other precious gifts was often presented on the murals in the grave of dignitaries in Thebes. Military expeditions of the pharaohs of the 18 th and 19 th Dynasties reached as far as the 3 rd Cataract, where the city of Soleb was founded, while Ramses II (1279 - 1213) built 7 big temples, including the two best known - in Abu Simbel. On the other hand, already since the Middle Kingdom the Nubians, famous for their archery skills, were incorporated into the Egyptian army and the horizon of the so-called Pan-Grave culture from Upper Egypt indicates that a large population of arrivals from the south settled there. |
