Archaeology of the Sudan
The first Sudanese artefacts arrived in the 70s of the last century, following Polish archaeological research in Old Dongola and Kadero. That work, started by Prof. Lech Krzyżaniak, laid down the foundations of one of the largest collections of Sudanese artefacts outside Sudan. The collection was further added to after the participation of Poznań archaeologists in the explorations of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the Southern Dongola Reach Survey. The most valuable of our artefacts, with the addition of unique objects from the Khartoum National Museum, allowed us to open the "Archaeology of the Sudan" exhibition in 2003. The collection is still increasing and the newest acquisitions are objects acquired by the Museum after the participation in the archaeological rescue project in the area of the 4th cataract, and paintings removed from the church in Banganarti.
