Biskupin - fortified settlement from Late Bronze Age

Nearly 2800 years have passed since people of the Lusatian culture had chosen this island as a place for a settlement.

The stronghold was built here in order to protect inhabitants against foreign tribes. This fear was not groundless - one of its ended the history of Biskupin fortress.

During just one winter thousands of oaks were cut, carpenter’s job was made and prepared logs were transported into the island. All types of wooden elements were standardized, which allowed to intense building works.

The settlement was divided into thirteen rows of huts, where one hut covered 70 - 90 m2. It was surrounded by a circuit street which ran alongside the rampart. The stronghold was also secured by breakwater.
