Another
Early Medieval hoard was discovered by the archaeologist Mirosław
Andrałojć and the electronic engineer Piotr Szyngiera. Archaeological
investigation was conducted from 22nd April 2006. In the fieldwork
also participated: Małgorzata Andrałojć, Patrycja Silska and Tomasz
Bartoszewski, Adam Budynek and Marcin Szymański. As a result of
these investigation 119 silver artefacts of the deposit were recovered.
The find contained coins and its fragments (Islamic, English,
German, Bohemian and Hungarian), fragments of ornaments, pieces
of molten silver and some parts of a vessel, in which the hoard
was deposited. Moreover the archaeological context of hiding of
this hoard and unknown details of its earlier discovering were
recognized.
The history of discovering
of the hoard from Zbiersk dates back to 1937. That year, during
digging up pine stumps Antoni Szczepaniak came across a vessel,
which broke down later. As it was estimated afterwrds, the deposit
would contain about 120 elements. Sixty five of them were delivered
to Państwowe Muzeum Archeologiczne in Warsaw in 1938. Present
excavation gave almost 120 new objects - the hoard had to be significantly
bigger. The hoard was probably hidden at the end of the third
quarter of the 11th century.
The discovery from Zbiersk
is next research success of a team executing the grant of Ministry
of Education and Science entitled " The archaeological context
of Early Medieval silver hoards from Greater Poland" (1 H01H 062
27). The project is administrated by Poznań Archaeological Museum,
and it is directed by Andrzej Prinke Ph.D. |
