One of two knives [V-2029]
North-western China
13th-11th century BC
This handsome tool is a part of the set of two knives; they have only one cutting edge. Each circular pommel features an intricately cast roundel that appears to float in the centre of the pommel. These roundels, the rowels that jut from each pommel, and the knobs on each blade guard are inlaid with small turquoise disks. The complex casting and decoration of these knives suggests that they may have been more for a display of personal status than for daily use.
