RomaniaEuropean Cultural Landscapes: An Interdisciplinary Approach

International Course, Busteni, Romania, 9th - 15th of May 2005. organised by CIMEC with the support of the EPOCH Network of Excellence

Aims of the course

There is a great need and demand from young archaeologists working in museums and/or having responsibilities for the regional sites and monuments record to learn interdisciplinary methods to identify and properly locate sites on the map, to record archaeological landscapes and to present them on-line for professional, amateurs and cultural tourism. The application of the European Landscape Convention will bring new challenges for archaeologists. The course aims to give archaeologists up-to-date knowledge in using basic principles of aerial survey, air photography, air photo interpretation and air-photo mapping (from oblique as well as vertical photography), satellite imagery, geographic information systems, digital mapping and data standards.

The course will have 20 - 25 participants from Romania and abroad.

Location of the course

The course is held in Busteni, Romania at the Training Centre, 16 Paltinului str. Accommodation and meals are provided in the premises of the Centre.

The preliminary course programme:

  1. BASIC principles of aerial survey: air photography, air photo interpretation and air-photo mapping (from oblique as well as vertical photography); satellite imagery (2 days x 6 hours per day). The lectures will be provided by Chris Masson, Bob Bewley and Peter Horne (English Heritage, U.K.), and Ioana Oltean from the University of Glasgow.
  2. Data Standards for Recording Archaeological Sites, Monuments and Landscapes (1 day x 6 hours). The lecture will be provided by Steve Stead, PavePrime Ltd (U.K.).
  3. Geographic Information Systems in Sites and Landscapes Survey: principles and case studies (3 days x 6 hours per day). Lectures not yet confirmed.
  4. European Landscapes on-line. Map Server.
  5. Presenting Cultural Landscape to the Public (Sorin Hermon, PIN, Prato, Italy)

The course will end with a field trip. At the end of the course participants will have a better knowledge on the use of interdisciplinary methods for surveying and presenting European cultural landscapes.

Participation

The participants should be archaeologists from museums and other heritage organizations, students in archaeology, computer specialists, topographers and other people involved or going to be involved in archaeological field survey and mapping, preventive archaeological researches. The courses will be in English. The participation fee is €400 and includes the course handbook, coffee and refreshments during breaks, meals and visits to museums. Accommodation will be provided for € 20 - 30 per person per night.

For young participants from outside Romania - with less than 5 years of activity in museums or other heritage organizations and good knowledge of English - we can offer grants covering participation fee, accommodation and meals.
